Painting Kitchen Cabinets
I love our home and all the beautiful natural light it gets, but from the day we moved in, I had always wanted to change our kitchen cabinets. The dark wood was just not my style. We looked into resurfacing the cabinets but it was costly and out of our budget. We loved the layout so we knew we didn’t want to buy new cabinets. We decided to paint ours ourselves and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome! Here’s what worked for us on our painted kitchen cabinets project:
PRODUCTS WE USED
·TSP cleaner
·120 grit sandpaper
·Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer
·Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore Advanced Paint with pearl finish
·paint brush (for edging)
·sprayer
PROJECT STEPS
·take off all the doors and hardware off
·clean everything with TSP cleaner
·lightly sand everything that will be painted
·make sure any residue is cleaned off before painting (otherwise the residue will stay where it is adding texture to the cabinets)
·tape off anything you don’t want painted
·using a good brush (I recommend this one) do all edges of the cabinets with primer
·roll the rest of the fixed surfaces with a small dense roller (I recommend this one)
·if any drips or texture are created, lightly sand once dry
*tip: do thin, light coats of paint to create a seamless look
·repeat same priming steps but now with paint
·we borrowed a professional sprayer for our doors, however there are some great options you can buy at your local hardware stores
·we propped up the doors on the ground in our garage when spraying so paint did not create a puddle underneath
*tip: don’t rush coats of paint, give lots of drying time, especially before hanging the doors back up
*tip: finish off the project by updating your hardware, it makes all the difference
It’s two years since we painted our cabinets and they are holding up so well. We have a few small bits of natural wear on them but overall extremely impressed with the outcome!
